Andrew has spent 25 years as an investor and his career breaks into three parts. The first half of his career involved three firms, one large and two small. There were several lessons learned. At the first firm (large) he learned the business of investment management, and one of the most important lessons was both the importance of marketing and its "grey side". At the next two firms, he was lucky enough to have a phenomenal mentor who ran the firm's small cap growth strategy. Andrew focused his time and energy in the role of junior analyst working on the small cap growth strategy. It was over this time frame that he really grew to enjoy and appreciate small cap stocks, but also was exposed to microcaps.
Munger has a quote, "Three rules for a career: Don't sell anything you wouldn't buy yourself. Don't work for anyone you don't respect and admire. Work only with people you enjoy"
Buffett have said numerous times to; do what you love, and do it with people you respect, have integrity and you enjoy spending time. That small cap growth team embodied those sentiments. We seek to embrace these sentiments once again at Odinson Partners.
In the second phase of his career he was at a large investment firm and worked on a small cap value strategy. Here he honed his skills in financial analysis and more importantly broadened his lens around investing. Charlie Munger has a concept he calls "latticework of mental matrix", the essence is learn key models in other disciplines. Over time you can develop a "tool box" upon which to address things and can avoid what he calls the "man with a hammer sindrome, where every problem looks like a nail".
We're now in the third phase, which is taking learnings and concepts from the first two phases and putting them to work. We know some things will work, some won't but our objective is to continually strive to improve and squeeze as much knowlege out of the lemons of our errors.
